South Lake Tahoe COVID Lodging

1/12 — Regional travel ban lifted

DISCLAIMER: I’m not a government official, or a medical professional. Is I’ve cited below, there are a half dozen different agencies involved in travel restrictions at the moment, and these restrictions are time sensitive, and can change on a daily basis. This document is provided for informational purposes only.

If you are planning on, or have planned a ski trip to South Lake Tahoe for January 2021, there have been some recent developments that may halt your plans :(

Bookings in Nevada are still being allowed as the state has different rules. It’s advised that you quarantine when crossing state line, but it seems not to be common or required at this time.

As of December 10th at 11:59 pm, the Greater Sacramento Region (which South Lake Tahoe is a part of) fell below the threshold of 15% ICU bed availability, and is subject to the California Regional Stay at Home order announced 12/6. As of January 12, this order was lifted

So you hotels are allowed to check you in again. If the ICU projections drop below 15% then the ban will re-instate for 3 weeks.

For California residents, traveling to South Lake Tahoe, who have lodging — even from a region which is currently under the more restrictive travel order, it is my interpretation that you can do this as long as you don’t interact with anyone from outside your household. The general travel guidance from 11/13 says that you are encouraged to stay at home, additionally you are encouraged not to travel more than 120 miles from your home, though this appears to be a suggestion rather than a restriction:

If you are traveling from one of the growing number of regions affected by the Regional Stay at home order in California, then you’ll need to be extra careful during your travel to South Lake, as leaving your home is banned, with specific exception:

The specific exception that I’m interpreting would allow you to leave your home directly to travel, requires that you do so without interacting with members from any other household outside your own.

Outdoor recreation is permitted by the order, and as of 12/11 Heavenly resorts is open to with restrictions.

Travel to Nevada Side of South Lake technically would require you to quarantine for 14 days on your return, though this clearly conflicts with the reality of many of the locals who live here and Heavenly Ski Resort which spans Nevada and CA. Please be responsible. Note the use of “Should practice” rather than “Must”.

This is based on the latest restrictions, you should check your county as well as the state guidance for updates since the update stamp at the top. Please let me know if you are aware of something that I’m not in the comments below.
