If you are interested in boating while at South Lake Tahoe there are a few options.
Rent
The easiest way, but will be $$. For a good portion of the year Boats and Jet Skis are available to rent from various Marina near south lake.
Ski Run Marina is close to town, and various resorts (Like Lakeland Resort) and allows for rental of Jet Ski’s, and Boats. Expect to pay a few hundred dollars for most rentals, depending on the size of the boat and the amount of time rented.
Own
If you have your own boat or Jet Ski it can be cheaper, but will require some time investment. Before you can put a watercraft on Lake Tahoe, you’ll have to take it outside of town to get certified and inspected for Quagga mussels. This inspection will install a strap between your boat and your trailer that certifies that it’s good to put into the water, and without it you can’t put in. You will need to schedule an Appointment for this inspection and pay the related fees. A once per season cost of around $60, and a per strap cost of $15. If you take out of Tahoe make sure to ask the marina to re-strap your boat, this will allow you to put into Tahoe again without re-inspection.
